Cars with curved dashboards can be problematic for mounting a phone holder in an easily accessible location that does not obscure forward visibility.
This location on the shelf for the recessed screen does not block anything for the driver. I think it is perfect.
So Oppo, show me where you mount your phones.

I have one of these:
It’s mounted (in landscape mode) on the left side of the windshield so the phone sits just above the dash and just to the right side of the A-pillar. Works reasonably well. In New York and Texas most of what it blocks would have been blocked by stickers anyway, but Massachusetts puts the inspection sticker on the passenger side. Either way there’s nothing you’d need to see in that corner. I run a power cable from the cigarette lighter, through the center console in an open area under the shifter, and then below the dash to the a pillar. Probably should replace with a fuse tap adapter at some point, but I’m lazy.

Left of the wheel was always my preferred spot, positioned in such a way that it’s usable without removing either hand from the wheel. Low enough to not obscure vision, high enough to be within your line of sight. Wireless charging. Perfection.

I suppose it would only block what was already blocked by the A pillar but I prefer mine not to be mounted on the windscreen. Good charging situation.
Magnetic phone holders make removal so much easier.

I like suction cup mounts placed to the left of the steering wheel . My latest is a NiteIze Steelie. This thing has fantastic grip and has held up well over the last year.

That seems like a great place. Is it one of those ones that is way extended from the mounting position? Mine is not extended so my options were more limited. Dash mounts are of course preferred but car makers like to make dashes too curvy for a suction cup

I like the perforated extension as to take up the same sight lines as the a pillar. That's the only place I would ever consider a windshield mount. I prefer a center position though.

This is quite easy to remove, though perhaps not as easy as a magnetic one. Just press the tab s as you reach to grab t he phone as you reach to take it. Putting it back, when you place it far enough to hit the button on the mount the arms retract to hold it. So it’s basically one smooth motion either way. There is zero chance I would give up the convenience of wireless charging to support magnetic mounts. And I don’t like using a case, so that’s another strike against the magnet approach.

Yeah, iottie unit. Same as facw has. Mounted pow on the windshield and extended a good 8inches. Surprisingly rock solid with almost no vibration!

In the Sienna I use a vent mount, which works well enough in a van..
In my Civic, I lay it in this little tray that was probably meant for change or chapstick or something like that..
(admittedly, I’m old enough that I tend to stop to look at the map and drive based on it as opposed to watching my indicator on a map..)

Yeah, this one telescopes quite far. And seems to do a decent job of holding position (I also had their previous model which despite a similar mount, shook aggressively when extended). It comes with an adhesive disc you can stick to your dash to provide a smooth flat mounting surface, but I really don’t want to be gluing anything to my dash.

Fortunately both you seem to have found a good out of the way place to mount it that allows it to only block the a pillar. Seems like a good solution.

I used to have it on the outside of the case for my old phone and it never bothered me. I've since stuck it inside on my phone but I'm not convinced it's better.

Vent mounts always seem to have too much play in them for me plus the chance of breaking the vents.

Do you print out the turn by turn directions?
![]() 06/23/2020 at 20:01 |

Custom made by a friend. I’ve posted about it before.
![]() 06/23/2020 at 20:01 |

Yeah, I do think it's a better solution in something like an old van than in any car..
![]() 06/23/2020 at 20:06 |

I have a friend with a totally thrashed first gen Pilot where he uses the the only vent that isn't broken off to hold his phone. I feel like that should be a warning.

Low mount but still in the field of view. That custom job is amazing! I probably would have done the same thing as in my Cruze and stuck it at the far corner of the screen recess shelf but this looks much better.

Carplay/voice over bluetooth.

Ah. Wouldn't that be uncomfortable while sitting?
![]() 06/23/2020 at 20:12 |

Fair point, I’ll keep it in mind for the future. In my Siennas case, it’s one moderate repair aw
ay from going to the big highway in the sky, so..

Then you would have to change your username and the fact that your no profile color field is brown (= sienna) won’t be somewhat clever anymore.
I think it depends on the structural integrity of the vent. In his case, the previous owner broke all them off somehow.

Right there in this here cup holder

What about when you need to get directions? It seems like a long way to look down.
Nice shift knob but those blanked out buttons are ugly. What are they for?
![]() 06/23/2020 at 20:29 |

I rarely ever use phone directions. I usually either look it up ahead of time and maybe write down a couple key turns or most other times I just know where I’m going. Salt Lake City having a grid system is super easy and a lot of times it’s just “get on this road, the only road that goes that way, and eventually turn left on the only other road.
I looked up what those blanks are for once but I can’t remember. Heated seats? Even though I don’t think that year WRX has them.
![]() 06/23/2020 at 20:29 |

I put my iphone 3gs and 4 in the tape player of my WRX. It worked great. Now phones are too huge.
![]() 06/23/2020 at 20:34 |

Yeah, in hindsight I should have come up with something more lasting for a username..
![]() 06/23/2020 at 20:34 |
|
I know I am not the person you asked, but I listen to directions don’t need to see.
The blank in front of the mirror controls is for the DCCD in the STI. The back two I have no idea, I have seen many WRX/STI and have never seen those buttons filled. Could maybe be heated seats?

Right now it only holds the tablet for OBD2 and torque. I have to modify or adapt to hold the phone.

My 6s might just make it. I have to run to the store so I will give it a shot

Been a fan of RAM Mounts for a while. The price is pretty steep for a phone mount, but it holds on strong enough I know I’m not going to have to worry about my phone flying out of the Exocet. Positioning is a bit of a reach, but it’s the price to pay for some protection from the elements and readability (since a longer arm would vibrate a bit too much).
Before it moved there, it lived in the cubby above the radio in the Outback XT since I didn’t use it for anything else . Don’t have a picture with it installed, but this should be enough to get an idea:

Leather wrapped hard mount for the Nokia, then cup holder and car play in the truck. I know these are both useless to you. Lol

I actually am not looking for placement suggestions since my current location has worked well for two years. I think that is hilarious.

Wood center console. Nice.

These are some of the straightest roads around. Most towns here have a small section of grid for the downtown and then the rest was just added on any time it was convenient. You get a whole lot of small conflicting grids if there is a grid at all.
It makes even less sense on the ground.
![]() 06/23/2020 at 21:39 |
|
I think seeing the map is more useful where the grid doesn’t make a lick of sense. I have the voice turned off because it gets annoying and I like to turn up the beats.

I would encourage you to look at streetview of Atlanta Georgia. Most roads are one ways. The roads are wide though, with some in the city center being as wide as 6 or so lanes. However, no one thought the region would ever be important enough to do
a
city planning, much less map out a coherent grid.
It doesn’t help that the city was build literally on top of a railroad junction (as in on bridges over the tracks in some places) and has some of the worst urban sprawl in the country. You typically get a grid that will go a few blocks and stop and then intersect with a competing grid.

Binky-inspired. Bracketry. There was a doghouse cover that came with the van and which I ripped out almost ten years ago in a raging temper.
![]() 06/23/2020 at 22:12 |

It might be worth it to go junkyarding for a new one. The van appears to be in excellent shape overall. How many miles has it done?
[brackets are good]
![]() 06/23/2020 at 22:15 |
|
The original one is stupid and has no brackets and I did not make it and it’s a PITA to remove when the doghouse needs to come out and I think I am going to pretend that I did not read your last reply.
![]() 06/23/2020 at 22:19 |

Have you seen GM trucks/vans of that year lately? They are all in so much worse shape than yours, which seems to be missing a few pieces of trim though.
[brackets] are good. That is some good wood working too. The Ipad mount is especially clever.

I totally saw this coming and I don't mind one bit. Aux cords for the foreseeable future for me. Cords don't have a subscription fee and neither does FM radio (though my favorite station folded RIP Alt 105.7)

When you googled “what happened,” that’s like the first question to pop up.
I was mainly flexing the Apple CarPlay with a CarPlay screenshot.

Yes I get the flex.

you should try proclip, even if you don’t buy their design (it’s pretty pricey), they have custom mount suggestions for most domestic vehicles for the past 10 years or so which might give you some ideas... example below

Though I wasn't clear I already have a good solution and am just wondering what other people have come up with. Thanks anyways. Those look pretty nice and I might go Sider one for my next car.

don’t use one.
